"Innovation is the creation, use, reuse or adaptation of an element (technology, software, process) in a new context or domain that helps solving (a) specific challenge(s) of this context or domain",
noted IPI News Innovation Contest 2011 winner Stephane Boyera.

Based on this idea, the News Platform category is aimed at projects related to news and information in all types of digital media using tested and open sourced news platforms.

Most of the projects we consider in this category involve: ideas associated with the improvement and development of data-based investigative journalism; an increase in community engagement with professional journalists; enhancement of news gathering and delivery through new technological mechanisms; data visualisation, processing and analysis; revenue models for online businesses. New ideas promoting the advance of news platforms and online journalism development are always highly appreciated.

Remember we will consider any innovative project providing people (in Europe, the Middle East and Africa) with reliable and concise information using available technologies in these areas. We recommend that every applicant include in their proposal economic sustainability aspects that may help us understand how their idea will create a lasting impact once the funding has been used up.

If you have a great idea that you think will make a difference in your country or region, apply before 23 February 2012, 15:00 CET.
